Subcontracting studios are contracted to handle certain parts of the animation production, where the main animation production companies lack the resources to do it. Most common areas that subcontractors are used in are in-between animation and finishing, there are also studios that specialise in background art or photography/composition. The range of involvement from subcontractors can vary a lot - from only doing 10% of in-between animation in a single episode of a TV series to handling the majority of the content of a single or more episodes (including directing, storyboard and animation supervision). It is also common for art and photography studios to be hired for all the episodes (including art and photography directors). Subcontractor studios have also turned into full animation production companies (for example Kyoto Animation) after which they shouldn't be considered subcontractors anymore on AniDB (even though the big studios also provide the same services to other animation production companies). Subcontractors themselves can subcontract other studios.
