The concept of monsters feeding off of humans and a select few that have special abilities to combat these threats was interesting... initially. Unfortunately, there wasn't much that I enjoyed from this series, the characters were not interesting, the plot and characters' motivations were ok and this series felt too long. I'm not sure how this compares to the game that this is adapted from, but that's really who may enjoy this series.

Scarlet Nexus is a 2021 anime that is adapted from a game of the same name, that came out around the same time the first episode was released. Probably not worth seeing unless you played the game.
I had the misfortune of playing the related game, which I found out about through a certain vtuber and I saw it on Steam and I thought that I would give it a go. Unforgivable. After going through that ordeal, I thought I may as well finish the anime, despite the ridiculously low rating on AniDB, which has once again led me down a path of digging through trash in hope of finding something redeemable. Unfortunately, it seems that the rating is deserved: the plot is a mess, the characters are essentially fan service, production is low, and overall the anime is very bland. Oddly enough, the anime Deep Insanity seems to be in a similar situation to this anime, especially since both are edgy "multi-media projects". I am unwilling to find out for sure.
The following describes the game that this anime is adapted from, but since it is a rather long rant, I have put it under the spoilers tag for brevity.
The plot of the anime is very messy and plagued with plot holes and uncertainties as well as generally weak and cliche writing. The anime itself does offer mildly better exposition relative to the game, that covers some plot holes and adds more sense to the plot, but that could not have been that hard to do in the first place. Even then, many of the remade scenes still suffer.
As was said before, the characters in the game all essentially represented a certain cliche that is well known in anime, such as tsundere, someone who is very ive, and even what is essentially shota, the last of which is just ridiculous and ensured that all the characters are generally relegated to being very cheap. The tsundere character in particular has a very unfortunate name, Shiden. It does not get better when it is discovered that his surname is Ritter (German for knight), making his full name, Shiden Ritter, look like a very childish anagram, so much so that even the aforementioned vtuber picked up on it. Another character is called Hanabi (japanese for fireworks, I believe) and of course her ability is pyrokenisis. For anyone who has seen even at least 10 anime series, the way the characters were in game would be annoying to no end. They dialled the characters down in the anime, but now they just seem very bland compared to their prototypes in game, and their stereotypes remain, generally. It is also weird how a lot of the characters are related by blood.
OST irrelevant. With such anime, paying attention to the OST and BGM is a tall order.
I only really know of animation done by Sunrise through the work they did on Love Live as well as Code Geass, and I can confidently say that the animation done on Scarlet Nexus falls far below of what I have seen them be capable of, even as compared to the original Love Live SIP which came out 8 years ago or the even older Code Geass. The level of animation honestly reminded me of the Chaos;Head adaptation as to how character designs changed in the adaptation, but even then the animation was slightly better. Chaos;Head is also far older and made at a time when it would appear that Chiyomaru had a very low budget. Some of the battle scenes in this anime are properly horrendous. It looks as if they were animated on Microsoft PowerPoint, both in of frames and how certain moving parts and characters in the scenes were not actually drawn into the scenes properly and instead being animated against background of solid colour or gradient. Oddly enough, the CGI fits well with the animation, but it is used sparingly.
Overall, this anime was done half-heartedly and, unlike Chaos;Head, does not even have solid source material to base itself of off. It was not a particular pleasure watching this, even as opposed to playing the game or watching some of the other offerings this season that also were not good in many cases. I am just surprised that they extended this to a full 26-eps of mediocre production and thought that this would be fine, though the game itself is not short either. Probably watch this if you have played the game and even then you may find yourself hating it.

This anime has a relatively odd characteristic to it. It is an adaptation of a non-VN jrpg, as was mentioned. There are games like Persona that traditionally get adaptations and there are various gacha and mobile based idol or military themed games that also get adaptations. Scarlet Nexus is neither. The game itself is a proper console and PC action jrpg title, not something that is too often adapted, at least as far as I know. It is also odd that Sunrise was the one that took the project on. Because of all of this, this anime looks more like an ment campaign and something secondary to the actual game. "Multi-media project" label is generally a red flag at this point. There are even codes in the anime that can be activated in game.
The game itself is nothing really to write home about whatsoever, apart from maybe, MAYBE the artistic direction, so I am surprised that this even got an adaptation. It had a rather weak storyline. It is some kind of an attempt to combine something like Seraph of the End type military storyline with the Nier series' post-apocalyptica and its jrpg form, I would guess. On a separate note, the city-sweeping missions and the computer mission really reminded me of Halo 3: ODST, a great game. What comes out of this is a weird mash of different edgy arcs and moving parts, many of which are never touched upon again, such as the human colony on the moon, which was supposed to be an important factor to the plot. The whole weird factor of the three cities fighting against each other is unclear to say the least. The exposition was terrible, with many important things that should have linked scenes and plot together occurring off screen. All of this just adds to the ton of plot holes and is not helped by the lack of lore as such. The characters are generally the worst part. It becomes very clear once you get access to the characters from both teams that almost all of them fill extremely common cliches. There is literally every anime cliche personality present that I know of. They did not even try to develop truly original characters, though they seemed to have attempted to put these cliches through a different perspective. The only things that save these characters from being irredeemable from the get go are their relatively nice designs and the fact that you get used to the cliche through the length of the game. Overall, the game itself is easily forgettable. The fact that it has high Steam reviews is probably due to marketing efforts and that for many people this was their first experience with an anime-esque game, so they were not aware of the cliches or other shortcomings, which is good for them. There were also not that many JRPG titles coming out at the time. In a sentence, this game can be described as fan service of sorts and nothing else.

For instance, the whole plot line by which Kasane tries to kill Yuito in the game was severely flawed. It appeared that she did it completely at random and half heartedly, and only later on was it revealed that she intended to do it, but for a very odd sense of emergency. In the anime, they remade this plot line in a way, but it still appeared that Kasane attempted the assassination with no goal of actually completing it. The part in the game, where Naomi Randall dies in an offscreen last stand was ridiculous. In the anime it was replaced by her also dying in a very weird fashion, but at least it seems less like the authors simply killing her off.
One particular overhanging theme in this anime is that the people without powers are repressed. However, it is unclear how many there are and in what way they are repressed. All that is really revealed is that they are few and that several of the characters went through experiments in order to awaken powers in them. This was a totally wasted theme, and one of the few themes actually present. There is also the theme with the moon and how they "repressed" the earth colonists, but that is also not clear enough to do anything. The time travel theme seems very secondary and uninspired.
